Germany Invades Poland
Europa, Europa: A True Story of the Holocaust by Solomon Perel, With his mother's parting words ringing in his ears, fourteen-year-old Solomon Perel set out from Nazi-occupied Poland hoping to find safety across the new Soviet frontier. Like large numbers of other Jews fleeing the Germans, Perel faced staggering odds against his survival. What actually transpired was far different from what anyone could have imagined. By a startling twist of fate, the young Jew found unexpected refuge ... as a student in an elite Hitler Youth school. Now this extraordinary and true story appears in English translation for the first time. With searing power and passion, Europa, Europa recounts Solomon Perel's harrowing struggle living a nightmare from which there seemed no escape. By the time Solly, as he was called by his family, left Poland that night in 1939, he was already an experienced refugee. Sensing the oncoming Nazi terror, his family had fled Germany several years before. This time, however, the family could not stay together and the youngster would soon be on his own. Reaching the Soviet shore after a dramatic river crossing, Perel was placed in a Russian orphanage, where he was accepted into the Komsomol, the Communist organization for young people. Then came June 22, 1941. When Hitler invaded the Soviet Union Perel was ordered, along with the other Jewish children, to flee into the interior. He fell into the hands of the German forces. Paralyzed by fear, and with a courage born of despair, Perel told his captors that he was, in reality, an ethnic German. To his astonishment, he was believed, and from that point on, his survival centered on his ability to conceal his true identity. Taken under the wing of the Wehrmacht unit, Perel experienced combat, and was lauded as a model of German youth contributing at the front.
Hide and Seek by Theresa Cahn-Tober, X In 1939, Irenka Licht had just turned three when Germany invaded Poland. She was sent to live separate from her Jewish family, spending six years hiding in cellars, attics, and a convent. In 1946, when Irenka entered the United States, her name was changed to "Theresa." This is her memoir of those years.
History of Poland (1939–1945) - On September 1, 1939, without formal declaration of war, Germany invaded Poland. Germany's pretext was that Polish troops had allegedly committed "provocations" along the German-Polish border, together with the dispute between Germany and Poland over German rights to the Free City of Danzig and to free passage between East Prussia and the rest of Germany through the Polish Corridor. Kingdom of Poland (1916-1918) - The Kingdom of Poland, also informally called Regency Kingdom of Poland (), was the state proclaimed by the Act of November 5 issued by Imperial Germany and Austria-Hungary. It was created within the former Russian territory of Congress Poland (however with no defined borders) in 1916 and existed as a satellite state of Germany until 1918. Polish areas annexed by Nazi Germany - After invading Poland in 1939, Germany decided to annex not only all the lands it was forced to return to Poland in 1919–1922, under the Treaty of Versailles (including the "Polish Corridor", West Prussia, the Province of Posen), but also other territories. The council of the Free City of Danzig voted "democratically" to become a part of Germany again (though Poles and Jews had no right to vote and all non-Nazi political parties were banned). Geography of Poland - Poland is a country in Central Europe, east of Germany. Generally speaking, Poland is an unbroken plain reaching from the Baltic Sea in the north to the Carpathian Mountains in the south.
